Three songs in, so damn boring, uninspired... Tried tweaking the EQ on my system, can’t make this sound decent

I don't particularly love the production either, namely the mastering.

I'm really surprised by the weak production, because that was the main concern with previous albums of theirs, and they even remastered Lykaia. Didn't make it through the whole album, seems a waste of time.

yeah idk why they opted for production like this. it's so flat and overcompressed. you can hear the drums clip and at points the vocals make everything else fizzle out.

It wasn't a waste of time for me, since I loved several songs, but I realize that the production may drive some people away.

Sounds like a project, mate. Let's prog with a big P/

The big P/ will only happen when my friend Jethro starts reviewing again.

So a typical Soen album. Gotcha. Is this an album you will play again? Great review as usual NoTrap

Haha Patience my friends, As Titan already know, I'm about to join my collaborator Nagrarok to make a ''ProgJect revival''. I'm not sure about the duration, but let's restart with a review minimum, since I have several ideas on the table. So do you guys feel the big P/...?
By the way, Notrap, your English is really excellent. It shows you're practicing a lot!

Good to know you guys will be back in business. I hope you review classics but also new stuff.
Well, thank you Mr. Jethro. Practice makes perfect, I guess. Translator is also a valuable help ;)
Thanks teamster, I appreciate it. Sure, especially the three singles. The problem is that I'm always listening to new things, with very little time to revisit previous releases, even if they are recent.

It represents still more efforts when you keep consulting translator, Notrap. But I'm certain you consult it less and less. Keep the good works coming, sir.
And regarding ProgJect, I have Nag's agreement for one review for now, but I have the feeling it will lead us further than that. It largely depends on his free time. And as far as I'm concerned, be sure, I'll review both classic and modern prog. With (I hope so) or without Nag (would be tough, but I could handle it)

That's nice, the site needs more guys reviewing contemporary prog. Looking forward to your first come back work ;)

I dig it! Not as much as Cognitive, which is by far more technical and my fav. But still a great album. My only complaint is that it isn’t a tad longer or with longer songs.

this is a solid, streamlined effort from Soen. some really potent moments on these songs, and a lot of cool guitar work to be found. however, i do wish the production were a bit punchy because damn...those guitar lines on "Monarch" and "Antagonist" are begging to be made more explosive, and i think the songs on this album are gonna be incredible live.
after this LP though, i hope they step away for a bit and refresh. they really need to try to take the next step, otherwise i think diminishing returns will start showing through, if they aren't already in some cases.

Man, the mix/production really holds this album back from reaching it's full potential. Such a shame, because there is some great stuff here, even if it isn't entirely new or innovative.
|

I second what everyone has said. Soen on autopilot. Some great tunes, some really boring ones, same old, same old. Illusions was incredibly boring for me, sounds like a power ballad lol
The opener, Antagonist and Dissident are probably my favorite.

Nice review although I think it's led me to the conclusion that I'll skip this. I found their last release really dull and sounds like this is duller.

This was okay. Not Fear Inoculum levels of garbage but I most likely will never revisit this again.
