Yup. Because it also applies the opposite direction: I don't care for the so many bands who play progressive rock if I don't like the way they play it.

Agreed. Just about any genre can be done well or badly... it often just depends on how it’s executed. Hell, I’d be fine with SW making a damn country album as long as he added something cool to the genre, lol

This dude needs to stick to mastering other people's music.

I'd be down for a SW country album. Besides, Trains had that banjo part, which slayed.

he might be able to pull off something like casualties of cool

Dude, SW doing a Casualties or Cool or a Ghost would be fucking awesome. I’d love something more mellow that focuses on the acoustic elements PT pulled off so well in the Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun era

I know what you mean div dude but in terms of the execution of something you don’t just try your hand at stuff willy nilly to ‘be different’, you channel what’s in the soul to create what you intend to make visceral.
It’s why everything is so shit now. The place it comes from is disingenuous as fuck, it’s created with a view to ‘being something’ not representative of the thing that stokes the fires to create it in the first place. Genuine music that’s not real.
Fucking brat shit.

"He should stick to prog rock he loves so much"
Eh, debatable. I'd like him to stick to prog, but not if it means more derivative 70s worship. I think his best work lies somewhere between the proggy and the accessible

"yet he’s constantly promoting this album with critic scores and TikTok videos"
People go to TikTok to learn about music? All I'm imagining is a 'hello, fellow children' situation from Steve Wilson on TikTok. No one from TikTok is going to care about this guy.

That's kinda my point though. The fact that he's even trying TikTok as a promotion avenue reeks of a certain kind of desperation and just being generally out-of-touch

how do you do, fellow kids? it's me, Steven Wilson! The guy who thinks phones are bad, coming live from the only app to commercialize music and shorten more adolescent attention spans than Vine!

He's also the same guy who used Hatesong as an "attack" on cheesy boy bands at the time but then used lyrics like:
Yes, I'm hearing voices too
And I'm more cut up than you
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah
