No but I also put less than zero stock in ryms opinions on things
Rym is good for a few things and good ratings is not one of them imo

It basically is

Album Rating: 3.5
I've tried to get into RYM a few times and it's honestly just a boring site.
I like reviewing here because it's a perfect place for me to express my true feelings on an album and also further develop my reviewing skills

>I've tried to get into RYM a few times and it's honestly just a boring site.
its the features that make it although you can find some hilarious takes as well
|

it just has such a shitty drab layout and - as far as music i'm concerned with goes - people seem to rate super neutrally on anything that doesn't have enough ratings for them to feel confident about their own opinion on. everyone is afraid to rate too far from the curve, a bit too sheepish for me.
but on the other hand, the database is incredible and the genre and descriptor catalogue is extremely comprehensive.

Album Rating: 1.5 | Sound Off
stunning 2.9 average, love to see it
|

great review! I really don't want to listen to this tho

wait til you hear about sputnikmusic dot com... i hear they dont even let you 1 certain albums
|

@park re: both comments
music with relatively low amounts of ratings and just lots of the genres i listen to in general on rym often seem to have very little rating spread, people just slap a sheepish 3 on it and call it a day, i get the feeling that people just don't know what to make of things and so they just fall in line with the couple ratings above them rather than swing for the fences and risk getting dunked on by some elitist who claims to know better or something
that doesn't happen here with genres that the site doesn't specialize in because here those albums have one rating and it's me
|

the lament of being a fan of 90s-onward non-ambient electronic amongst the uber nerds
>that doesn't happen here with genres that the site doesn't specialize in because here those albums have one rating and it's me
metalheads and rock/proggers tend to fall in line a lot and 3.5+ anything by a metal band as long as its not trying to be a different genre :^)
i think though... probably my only real point of contention is the assumption that mid range ratings are not as valid as polarised ones?

"metalheads and rock/proggers tend to fall in line a lot and 3.5+ anything by a metal band as long as its not trying to be a different genre :^)"
i'm sure they do and i'm sure sputnik is terrible about this as well as sput actually likes cookie-cutter metal and prog shit but i'm not talking about that so it's not relevant
"the assumption that mid range ratings are not as valid as polarised ones?"
not insinuating this at all
|
| |
i'm saying near end of spectrum ratings don't exist in the instances i'm talking about, which to me is sus and comes off like people are just going with whatever everyone else thinks, and makes me not value rym ratings on the shit im interested in
|
| |
well what do you think is the likelihood that people who listen to and rate less popular music are way less likely to find most things particularly engaging (or particularly offensive for that matter i guess? not sure)
cuz thats been me lately lol
|
| |
"the lament of being a fan of 90s-onward non-ambient electronic amongst the uber nerds"
yes lol
|
| |
like if im going through some obscure dnb singles that 5 other people hve rated, if i genuinely think they fall into the "this is pleasant and prob above average for the genre but i dont see myself coming back to them though i might have 10 years ago" camp, then yea im gonna 2.5 idk
|
| |
"well what do you think is the likelihood that people who listen to and rate less popular music are way less likely to find most things particularly engaging (or particularly offensive for that matter i guess? not sure)

i understand the sentiment and have been through phases like that but i'd think the correlation would be weak, but not non-existent. i think you can safely argue that some people that listen to less popular music are simply doing it because they have exhausted other musical avenues and are having a hard time getting sounds that trigger those dopamine receptors but i don't think that is universal enough to be much beyond negligible

"it just has such a shitty drab layout" - nuh-uh they just got a fresh new UI and now it looks absolutely ready to visually contend with other music sites in the year of our lord 2016
|
| |
Apart from Sput of course which has a UI so old I'm surprised it's not been listed as a Site of Internet Heritage yet
