These guys really brought it here. Every song is amazing. Glad they kept it to a trim 9 songs though; it feels like we're only getting their best.

Ngl this is way more boring than I thought it'd be

Dang. That's harsh.
I was literally smiling ear to ear while listening to this. Feels like such a huge maturation for them.
|

I listened to some of their old stuff awhile ago and thought it was pretty run of the mill, so I'm excited to hear that they seem to be growing stronger in their sound! I will definitely try to hop on this soon.
Great review by the way. I know people hate it, but the brand new comparisons are always welcome in my book. haha
Believe it or not you were the one that got me into them a couple years ago when I was an angsty lad. lol

This sounds right up my alley at the first listen. I really love the mood.

My first listen of this left me incredibly underwhelmed. I get what they were doing with the meandering, slow burn approach, but to me it seemed like no song reached any sort of conclusion. Gonna give it another go, but to me this seems like good idea, mediocre execution so far

@Feather: Yes, the dynamic shifts here are monumental. I love how subtly they occur as well; the whole thing just feels like the tide coming in and going out. So gradual, but so huge.
@IsildursBane44: That's awesome to hear, it's not every day that people get into post-2010 Brand New so I'm glad I was a part of recruiting another fan. Regarding Seahaven, I feel like the BN comparisons are pretty unavoidable. I could have intentionally side-stepped them but what's the point.
@jusplathemus: Glad to hear it. The mood/tone/atmosphere is so dark and mysterious; I love it.
@dmathias: Sorry to hear that it didn't resonate with you. I agree with the meandering assessment entirely. There's only a few songs that conform to a rigid structure, but that's what I love about it. It feels like they really put it all on the line here while risking their traditional sound, which IMO, was only a notch above average. This is a lot more experimental and also more ominous, dark, et al. I don't necessarily agree that the songs never arrive at a conclusion though - at least musically/instrumentally, each track has a unique flourish or crescendo. Lyrically it's hit or miss but there's some incredible lines here that I'd definitely count as reaching an important conclusion/point/realization.

I don't know if they were going for that here, but I think something not having a conclusion could also be a valid point in itself. For me, this idea definitely fits with the atmosphere of the album.

That's a good point. Something doesn't have to be conclusive to be good and there's something intriguing about music that feels open ended. With that said, I definitely got a sense of resolution from most of these tracks; the flourishes and crescendos are amazing throughout and the album’s closer is a damn masterpiece of sad emo balladry.

@Grey the only song I have ever jammed from these guys is 'Love' off their Ghost ep and never cared for anything else they had done. This is different.

Mucho agreed with dmat so far with the addendum that the overdriven moments were more underwhelming than the slowburning ones (esp on that opener, hot damn that guitar solo did not do it for me).
Ngl though, a strong factor behind me checking was to see how accurate the the JLizard reference was, and while most of this sounds absolutely nothing like Goat, there was a palm muted guitar thing in "Moon" that sounded vaguely similar to "Karpis" (maybe the worst track on that alb but still), so kudos ig.

First listen and I feel an immediate 4 at least. It's their best album. I love the sound of the drums on this.
