Started with Aathma and afraid to look beyond. It was a monstrous surprise to me that a band that good hadn't crossed my path prior.

Aathma is incredible, but the rest of their discog is on par with it or at least worthy competition. Each of their records has a different sound to it, but their general aesthetic remains constant throughout. As said previously, this leans heavier on their death metal/melodic death metal influences, which is a motif more comparable with their earlier work in Core and Shin Ken. During and after Shin Ken is when they go more and more down a technical route, though the progressive elements have been a large characteristic of their output since the beginning.

They definitely have cohesion and charm so I dunno how to respond to that one.

Isn't there anything else you can recommend that's not an album by the same band? Actually never mind. Checked out the album. Can't think of a band off the of my head to compare with, probably because there are too many you could recommend haha. Anyway - not really into this type of metal. Guitars sound awesome, though. Some dude in there kind of sounded like Jesse Leach when he did screams.

Well I mentioned comparisons in the review, the sidebar was more for comedic purposes. Early Opeth, Symphony X, Dream Theater, Dark Tranquility, Edge of Sanity, Ne Obliviscaris, other prog inspired/melodic groups. I can go on if need be.
In fairness, Persefone are very good at blending whatever influences they have into their own identity, so comparisons can be difficult to make.

| |
Persefone are fairly unique honestly, and each album of their's is pretty different from each other.
Edit: nevermind.
|
| |
Yeah, that's kind of what I got out of skimming through all the tracks. Not really my thing. I used to be into Opeth pretty heavily, though, so I can see that comparison to early Opeth.

If nothing else, Persefone deserves respect for being as unique as they are. Few artists produce the sound that they produce. And, as Jared said, they can hold on to the same identity while producing albums that vary from each other and have their own aesthetic strengths.
Their songwriting is also a lot more concise and purposeful than is given credit for, but that's par for the course when it comes to progressive metal.

I agree with that for sure. These guys own their niche.

They usually release albums on a 4 year schedule too, so I am a happy camper going into 2021.
