I think where your confusion is stemming from is that you're perceiving "obnoxiously fake snare beats" as an insult, rather than a neutral, if not endearing descriptor of New Jack, which was my intention.
"Janet is certainly one of the giants that lifted MJ on their shoulders to stardom, despite being his contemporary (all the more impressive!) and unfortunately a footnote-artist in the pop music canon"
This is precisely why I ended my review the way I did. I didn't want to ramble on about New Jack in modern times because it wouldn't be super relevant to the album itself (it's a review of Control after all, not a report on New Jack Swing).
I'm very glad you enjoyed this review though and appreciate the pos. This is one of the two or three reviews I'm most proud of.

Production on this is so good for 1986; could’ve fooled me into thinking it was a decade younger. Enjoying both the new Jack and Minneapolis elements!

Yea the beats here have aged so well. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are the goats. Keep preaching the gospel on this classic

I just did a review for a album called Angel Touch by Cindy, and I put this as one of the recommended albums hoping people check it out. Production style is similar at times, and has some New Jack Swing elements too. It's admittedly J-Pop but she incorporates quite a bit of English, so yall really might dig it.
