"Man, "The Summoning" is an incredible track. I think this album will take a few more listens to fully click with me, but the aesthetic is fantastic." - PostMesmeric
This, exactly.

I've literally only ever heard the one hit wonder by this band and it's that song ''Stars'' and I never liked it. Particularly remember finding the guys vocals on that song to be super lame and the lyrics really corny. Is all their stuff like this or is that song different? by the way i saw the band performing that back in the day on some TV program in the 90's it colored my view of the band and that song, dude looked super lame. not that thats important but like he looked like a typical sort of douchey college indie guy try hard, again hate that song

like this album cover a lot though, can't imagine that same guy singing songs with an album cover like this, wouldn't fit in my mind, we'll find out though I guess if they sound the same

Just saw this on the homepage and just let out three audible "What?"'s in a row. I am very happily surprised. Very excited to listen.

"...one of the most extraordinary things about this album is the way it shrugs off a twenty-three year interim period like a Lovecraftian giant waking up to an almost unrecognisable world after a timespan it considered to be a brief nap."
One of my favorite lines from any review in a long time.

gotta say the song titles here are awesome too, really convey some sweet imagery cus their previous albums' song titles were kinda awkward

I thought I was seeing things when I saw a review on a new HUM album. I immediately surfed to Bandcamp to purchase it. These guys haven't lost a step at all. The sound is massive. If anything, Talbott's vocals are better and continue to be a perfect counterpoint dynamically with the thick slices of heavy guitar. Also, with respect to the drums, I was thoroughly impressed. No disrespect to the OP who wrote a most excellent review. Will have this in my playlist for the rest of the summer no doubt.

"Also, with respect to the drums, I was thoroughly impressed"
V glad people are vibing the drums tbh, starting to think I have a personal gripe with treb-happy snare tones lol
"not that thats important but like he looked like a typical sort of douchey college indie guy try hard"
google: 'shoegaze.' ig Stars is a kinda corny with its couplets, in a cute way. most Hum lyrics are less direct and at the very least more interesting in their imagery; Astronaut/Downward lean more into scifi vibes but this is more nature-oriented
"yeah but what if I don't care"
you never claimed the vox was a step down, so enjoy your armchair ig?

"Vocals are exactly the same as they've always been tho (post-Electra 2000, anyway)"
More or less, but the vocalist definitely sounded way more engaged on Downward particularly on songs like If You Are To Bloom. The vocals on this makes even Contortionist's Clairvoyant almost seem interesting in comparison. Almost.
