Byrd had been around a while when he did this, and I really appreciate how he kept trying to grow as an artist, while also keeping pace with all the musical change and the ascendance of rock and funk going on around him. And this just cooks.

oh absolutely. Byrd definitely seems like somebody who uses trends and zeitgeist to his advantage, rather than chasing them cause that's what's hot. every stylistic bend sounds purposeful and meticulous.
