It's true that genuine brutal prog is very rarely released and can probably be used more specifically than I use it here. Also, my point was merely to say that Brutal Prog bands, especially the inventors of the style, Ruins and TFL, have strong math-rock influences (not that the two genres are essentially the same). Using avant-prog in relation to a band like Area feels iffy: I would consider them to be more of a jazz-fusion outfit than an avant-garde progressive rock outfit. Situating them within any one idiom, no matter how specific is quite difficult. I would probably just consider them avant-garde if I'm honest.

Demetrio Stratos was an insane singer. Despite Luglio, Agosto, Settembre (nero) being perhaps their most popular song (at least in Italy) I always liked the jazzy Arbeit Macht Frei more. This is perhaps one the best prog albums ever.
