It warms my heart to see people checking out Styx in 2020.

I'd still recommend starting with The Grand Illusion if you're a newcomer, then proceed to this album, then maybe Paradise Theater.

One of my favorite things about Styx is how they had three totally different styles of vocalists but they worked together so well. You've got Dennis DeYoung for all the high notes and softer ballads, James Young for the gruff heavier rock, and then Tommy Shaw was the best of both worlds and incredibly well rounded. I know this is going to be a strange comparison, but it reminds me of The Monkees, who also had three distinctly different singers who could each hold their own and were always given a slice of the pie for lead vocals for every album. Very different styles of music, but the way they balanced responsibilities is very similar.

Wouldn’t give any Styx record a 5 but this is their best, solid 3.5/4. Was actually the first person to add this to the database on my original account

Kansas is better as far as cheesy pop prog goes. I did see Styx live in 2010, that was a fun show

Kansas is an awesome band, regardless of cheese

Don't know if I prefer this one or Grand Illusion. I think this might be a little bit more consistent but GI has Man in the Wilderness and Castle Walls which are by far their best songs imo

Kansas was more instrumentally talented but Styx was way better at crafting a hook.
