"The best singer/songwriter of this generation is back at it again"
that's a violently bold claim hmm
Not really, he’s certainly in the conversation for most people who care about these things. Southeastern is the best singer/songwriter album of the millennium, even if the rest of his work doesn’t quite match it.

I still need to dig into that one properly. "Elephant" hit me hard but the rest hasn't yet

even if that was true (which it probably isn’t), the millennium is only 2% over with for now. Im the best basketball player in my bedroom today.

I mean, of the millennium "so far" is obviously implied in my statement. It's also obviously my opinion, which you can of course disagree with. I can certainly understand why someone might think this particular album is stale, but I'd challenge you to try Southeastern and tell me boldface that that album is as well.

I'm not saying I think it is, but I can see why one would think it is.

And I should clarify that I don’t necessarily think that he’s on the level of Dylan (although I think Isbell’s best can rival Dylan’s best), but I can’t think of an artist active right now that is more comparable to Dylan than Isbell. With that said, if you have those recs I would be thrilled to be proven wrong lol
And I mean yeah the generation is only part of the way done, but I’ve also only experience artists in the part of it that has happened so far

this is great, more memorable on first listen than Southeastern imo but I know that's more of a lyrics one

I never realized Jason has very crooked teeth.
I also didn't mean to spark controversy with that Dylan comment lol. Jason is Jason and I will continue to stan

Honestly based on Southeastern alone I can get on board with praising him on the level of Dylan

agreed on the review's point about the 400 Unit coming into their own here. The arrangements maximize their versatility in really refreshing ways more representative of their live chemistry than past studio work
anyway this is lovely. not in competition for his best album or anything but handily posed to be one of the best in this style for this year

Listened to cover me up. Not my style. I found it about as exciting as a cruskit

This album is where it's at folks. Beautiful stuff.
There's something about the chorus on Be Afraid that I love so much. It gives a wonderful sense of high moral after a string of melancholic ballads.
