Dude the average prog metal fan doesn't even know Fates, it's embarrassing tbh. Especially when they arguably have the best discog in prog metal.
Their music and lyrical themes are darker and more mature than most prog metal bands, and I think that hurt their mainstream appeal compared to Queensryche and DT

I always felt Jim Mattheos was too distant and inward-looking through the years. And tbh, after Parallels someone would expect they would soften their approach and make the crossover. They did the opposite. They recorded some demanding stuff, they followed a low profile path and those things didn't help them to be embraced by a wider audience. But, really, as long as they keep recording those tasty albums and not the mediocre potatoes DT and Queensryche are recording, they will always have a core of fans that other bands would really wished they had.
