This one kind of got better over time for me. I do prefer it over TBEITBN but Dustin's lyrics, man, they haven't recovered. Another good review I'd say!

Thought this was some of the staff being cute. Nope, just Sowing on a roll.

I absolutelly agree on "beyond the pines" being a mediocre track for thrice standards. It feels like they could easily write 8 songs like that in a week.

"Branch in the river" is also a low point to me. Solely rediscovering a somewhat heavier style does not make it a good song. The Chorus' repetitiveness destroys it to me.

Really love "My Soul" though.

You know what is easier than making a new tracklist for this album probably just listening to a pre 2010 thrice record

Done that, heard 'em all. The modified tracklist is merely an alternative way to enjoy this. Obviously though Illusion of Safety through The Alchemy Index comprised this band's golden era.

The only thing I liked from this was "The Dark" which honestly is an amazing Thrice track... but the rest is horrible.

Actually the only songs I straight up disliked were Hold Up a Light and Everything Belongs. My Soul is nice and smooth but just ok. The rest goes from average to great. I do agree the album doesn't flow well and man does a well thought out tracklist makes a difference. I sometimes do my own version of tracklists just so I can enhance the experience.

I dont get why Hold Up a Light in particular is so hated. its FAR from peak Thrice and definitely one of their weakest songs but people act like Dustin Kensrue killed their cat when speaking about it.

Easily their worst album and a big step down from To Be Everywhere, which was pretty great imo. The Dark is a great song though.

This is better than TBEITBN. The previous is more consistent but ultimately not as good as the peaks are here.

Well it was the thesis of my review, ha:

Palms’ uneven ground also affords it some superb heights. It’s a riskier album than To Be Everywhere…, Major/Minor, and even Beggars, but after three albums of steady alt-rock, isn’t that exactly what you’d want to see? Thrice’s gambles obviously do not hit at a perfect clip, but the peaks are higher than the valleys are low – and if that’s the cost of progress, then I’d say it’s well worth enduring a few ear-grating minutes to get through ‘Hold Up a Light.’
