Gave this a good go the last week. Maybe my ears are uneducated to this sort of fare, but this is gorgeous.

John had a nine pound hammer, died with it in his hand

Album is inconsistent to a wild degree: the title track, The Roving, and Mountain Rain are all basically classics in my book and then everything else is mediocre-to-decent.

Bumped this to a 3.5 recently, reasonably hyped for a new one

That's right! All of them deserve the highest star score here Fun Games

I'm both excited and nervous about the prospect of them releasing a double album.

Very good album, it’s definitely frontloaded (Doof said somewhere that the first 3 tracks are all you need from this and I’m kind of inclined to agree, those are all superb, especially “The Roving”) but I like everything except for “Bright Morning Stars” a fair amount.

Agreed. I haven't been able to get too hyped about this band though, including the new one. They're 3.5 material straight across the board -- nice, pleasant, and throughly uninteresting lol.

Good quality MOR stuff is incredibly hard to pull off but the new one is Fleetwood Mac/Tom Petty at their best levels of that type of thing.
Already underrated! ;)
I really think they are showing more of their own personality and style now on the new one, relaxing into being a settled band, the second album was a decent bridge to that but didn’t quite have it nailed.
