^^^ if you're gonna knock that why read reviews at all? Every music review is published through somebody's opinion (or taste-based preference) which may not match your own. with that being sad I chuckled at the best rapper of the generation statement since this would probably be a hard 2 for me.

Because I still value others' opinion, yo! I think I get your point, but for example I'd still like to see others' opinions on food, drink, products, etc. even if it doesn't determine my opinion.
I personally use reviews (music and otherwise) for an idea of what to expect before forming my own opinion. I suppose I don't mean to knock it, I just take issue with portraying things as black and white.

Not really feeling this review to be honest. Doesn’t really feel like a review of the album so much as jerking off to earl. You talk about the actual record for like half a paragraph
|
| |
Idk if I'd call it jerking off, but the intro definitely put me mentally on the defensive. To be fair, Earl more or less has his style dialed in by now, and there isn't a ton to talk about imo outside of his delivery, style, and lyricism.
I think it's still p well written

I applaud rowan on the fact that he leads the discussion about hip hop on sput as a staffer. we had soby for a while and gnarly and others. though since then there has been a pronounced gap in staff reviews in the vein of rap-especially well written ones. while there is plenty of fan service in this piece the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs respectively work well in making his point albeit there is not a lot of information about the album in either. the hyperbole which he mentions seems perfectly appropriate to me, I think it can spur a great argument about who really is the best in the game now.

"Best rapper in the game" might be the most played out genre trope out there for me. What does it matter who we rate as 'best' aside from personal taste-based preference? We have access to a dumbfounding number of excellent artists these days. Sample to taste imo.
you are of course right, it's a cliche and a fallback argument for hip-hop fans these days. the reason I lead with it is because, in my argument, Earl's music favours the interior life of the person listening more than any other rapper (that I know of) - so whereas "yo Vince is the game" is me making the same old argument over again, saying "Earl is the best of his generation" is the only reaction I could have to his music, because it feels so tailored to me specifically. I don't mean to argue he's the best rhymer in the game right now or has the best flow - he's simply just making my favourite music in the genre, by far
I suppose I don't mean to knock it, I just take issue with portraying things as black and white.
reducing it to b&w was not my intention and sorry if I did! Earl's music is so subjective that the only possible lens I can think to appreciate it with was the one I mentioned - I could go in and analyse every beat and rhyme scheme on here, but I think that would just be boring for writer and reader

I mean there's only one thing I can really counter to this. you probably already know what it is. here goes: the whole thing is about the actual record, dawg. everything here is informed by the feeling I got from listening to the music and written in the context of me trying to analyse what makes Earl's music unique to me, which I think I did adequately. again, I could have made this a dry beat-by-beat breakdown of every lyric and bar, but to me that goes against the actual essence of why I listen to Earl's music, which is the feeling - I'd suggest genius.com if that's what you're interested in though

you know what? fair point

I wish he was still doin it for me

Yeah, absolutely! Like I mentioned earlier, I feel your points generally made sense; I just personally prefer to clearly delineate that my opinions are just that and avoid making definitive statements in my reviews.
I don't think this review comes off as elitist or pretentious, but I also know how hard it can be to read tone (esp on the internet lmao), so I take the more cautious approach. But then again, the understanding is all reviews are "just *like* opinions, man..." so maybe I'm being nitpicky here.

I dont mean to alienate the reader of course but it can feel a bit silly to me to delineate an opinion every time it comes up - like why would I be putting it in a review if it wasn't my opinion y'know. My hope was the context of this review would make it clear I meant "earl is the best for the subjective experience I bring to his music" not "he's objectively the best and other opinions suck" ofc
|
| |
Yeah, I definitely got that vibe. I think overall if I was to play editor, I'd just say that it was a REALLY strong lead-off paragraph, which just tends to be polarizing.
That being said, I've definitely had my share of writing gaffes too, haha!
|

I think it's justified on the basis that he qualifies it immediately. Even though I don't think that kinda qualification is always necessary. (It works really well with the point made in this review, though, IMO.)
|
| |
Thought the review was good personally, although it doesnt read like a 3.8 as much as say a 3.3-3.5 IMO
BUT it helps me understand what you see in his recent music better, sometimes the hype has made it seem like people see him as a lot more innovative than he actually is IMHO
|
| |
For me tho, whether we are talking about the sampling, lyrics, rejection of maximalism etc etc, it's all treaded ground, something that was a lot more exciting a few years ago than it is now

Album art is really cool. I wish he'd rap a bit more like he did on really doe
