@Clavier Totally agree. It’s like the whole colorblind argument. Ignoring the identity aspect takes away the best identity from the person, but then to solely focus on the identity reduces a person to a sole characteristic, which then dehumanizes and reduces both them and their art. She’s a “woman making music”, but the overwhelming emphasis should be on the music

One listen in and I have mixed feelings. The atmosphere is definitely unique. I like that she tries different things - the stutter stops/starts, the twang in the guitar, etc. I hate to say it, but it's a little...boring? Might be a grower, I like enough about this to at least settle in the 3.5 range but seeing the overwhelming reception from others, I feel like I'm missing something important. Perhaps the lyrics will help too; I plan on investing at least 2 more listens.

I've got a few gripes with this record but within the realm of indie folk this has to be one of the most varied records sonically I've heard in a while, from timbres and texture to melodic progressions to individual song structures to production dynamics and so on. I'd be curious to see if your thoughts change on subsequent listens because I struggle to find even a single song that sounds like another on this record. What would make it less boring going off your first listen?

@Sowing Definitely a grower. My first listen didn’t really do anything for me, now I keep coming back

Glad you covered this, neek!
Was so hyped for this but the excitement kinda wore off after a few listens. Still a great album tho without a doubt.
I mentioned this somewhere before but this is incredibly similar to Johanna Warren if you haven’t heard her!

I agree on most of this - the textures/progression/production are all brilliant. I think perhaps I'm just hoping for more energy in her vocals at times, but that could be a setting thing where I just need to hear it in the right mood. Also - and this is just me projecting my own wish list onto a random artist - I'd love to see one of these indie singer-songwriters (especially the female ones) explore a heavier side. This probably isn't an apt comparison but I love how Big Thief's 'Contact' ends, and aside from 'Not', they never really revisit those crunchy, winding electric guitars. I'd kill for a whole album of that stuff. I think Common Holly set the bar so high with the creativity of her atmospheres that I was hoping she'd have these big instrumental moments to really drive it home.

This started as a revelation but lost some luster by album's end.

grew on me considerably over successive 2nd/3rd listens...love all the subtle little nuances this album possesses
it still needs something in the way of energy or a wow factor but it's quite pretty and spellbinding

4th listen: OK the more I listen to this the more I love it
I'd still like a few more moments like the end of Crazy OK but also the fact that that's really the only explosion makes it kind of endearing
Edit: halfway through 5th listen and this could be an easy 4.5 by Monday lol oops

We're familiar with your process Sowing, lol. First two tracks are omg but everything is quite strong.
Everyone in here should check Great Grandpa btw.

Yeah the Great Grandpa single I heard was great, need to get on that

It will surprise folks but I'll soft play it.

Putting it on now

Sowing, have you jammed the likes of Chelsea Wolf, Darkher, Anna Von Hausswolff, Nicole Saboune, Nicole Dollanganger, etc? There are tonnes of artists implementing heavier stuff as is. Glad to see this is growing on you!
