There is such a thing as atmospheric death metal, meaning the death metal equivalent of blackgaze and post black metal? If that is the case, this could be of interest to me

*Looks at 2019 chart, realises there's another new album screwing up the '100% record' of checking current top rated releases. Views artist page and deeply exhales, more tech deathcore, this is going to be a slog... but then, what's this? A Marskid 5/5 review, no? Really... what? Actually reads review and sees this may be a different beast entirely*
Interest piqued.
P.S Wrath of Vesuvius is such a badass name, the shortening/abbreviation is a damn shame.

These guys deserve the attention. A little too-little too-late but might as well provide their parting gift the spotlight it has earned.
And yeah, as Wrath of Vesuvius, they were technical deathcore. There was an 8-minute track capping off Revelation that sounded a lot like what would come on the self-titled, which itself still carried a lot of aggression. This is a much more atmospheric affair.

Eventide is pretty darn amazing, hope the rest of the album keeps up.

In the grand scheme of things, "Eventide" is only a prelude to even greater things to come, and even then "Eventide" is already awesome.

Is it worth backtracking from here?

The self-titled is very much like this, but its approach is much more aggressive and involves a fair amount of technical death metal. Beyond that, their earlier music is technical deathcore--well-done deathcore, but I understand that deathcore continues to be a hard sell.

While this album is very, very good. I cant help but feel sad that they dropped their original style, which was something pretty unique.
Even though this is generally more my kind of tea
