Disappointed with this on first listen, but it's grown on me.
I do hope they get weird with whatever comes next though.

Band has always been mediocre, even when EitS was considered innovative.
They were pretty good live though, I saw them around 2013.

Edit: this is my 666th message, praise the lord!

I wouldn't go that far, but I've always felt they have one AWESOME album in them and they just haven't released it yet. That day is yet to come.

When Memorial came out, it was supposed to be THAT album... I felt like Ethel was the only song in which they tried to do their own thing, other than that this is just a band to be exclusively enjoyed live. Very good performers, mediocre composers.

Memorial is their best album, I agree - if that's what you were implying anyhow. But I still wouldn't give it anything over a 3.5. Post-rock/metal is such a strange subgenre in a sense that there are lots of bands that just produce copypasta without ever trying to stray from the formula and there a few of those who try a variety of approaches - and sometimes it works REALLY well.

Until 'Empros' came along, I enjoyed 'Enter' more than the rest cuz it was more math rock tapping and less chugging along. They're awesome live cuz they can literally throw 9 songs from this and the past 5 albums and make it sound like it's from one record, also it's fun to see them do their thing especially the bassist with his huge MOOG board.

At least this band along with Pelican survived the instrumental post-metal phase and are still going strong cuz that was getting annoying by 2009 of how uninspired a lot it sounded.

Memorial changed it up slightly cuz it sounded better produced than Empros (that one should've been THAT album). All of their albums since then sounded too short, I appreciate but can always do without the ambient/guitar interludes.

Pelican's best albums are way better than anything by these guys. But then, Pelican haven't actually released anything good after Australasia - until their new one came long - while Russian Circles managed to stay somewhat consistent, albeit fairly generic.

lmao the one after Australasia is a classic. Pelican had their hard jams appear throughout like the vocal track on What We All Come to Need, but the latest one is def more consistent. Disagree bout RC being generic unless with talk about Station cuz that one was a bit of a drag compared to the rest.

Yeah, my main complaint with the whole genre is that it relies too heavily on the ambient parts, which felt old in 2009 so I fail to understand why somebody would do this exact same thing ten years afterwards. It's not a coincidence that the most famous bands in the genre are the ones who strayed away from this trend.

Oops, Rel, I was being dumb. I meant the one after Fire. For some reason, I thought Australasia came AFTER Fire LMAO

Empros was fairly generic too, to be honest.

Empros felt too 'light' sounding for my taste. 309 is a fuckin classic also but it was the heaviest ever got, goddddddamn that bassline.

I wish RC tried at least experimenting with length. Stop making these 6 minute tracks and make something 10, 15 minutes long.

We might get a 15 minute long pedal demo in that case

Just realised I haven’t heard Enter, my ‘first 3’ comment was an error. I started with Station... Geneva is my fave of the Station - Geneva - Empros triumvirate.

I’ve only heard Guidance and Memorial but I love both. Still gotta hear their earlier albums.
