I don't think they merely let it happen, I think they actively pursued it. I could've sworn I read something on fb about how it was part of their vision, which confuses me. More Baroness albums are mixed poorly than not, so it's kind of to be expected at this point, sadly

Fuck it I'm slapping a 4 on this, might rise to a 4.5 with a few more listens but we'll see. I'm actually not as bothered by the mixing as I thought I would be, it's definitely bad but (barring a few parts) not distractingly so.

Also this is Baizely's best vocal performance to date by far (and I would argue he's been genuinely great since Yellow and Green) and Nick Jost absolutely kills it on most of the bass parts here.
Just some things I feel should be noted before this thread inevitably devolves into kvetching about the production

Totaly agree. Baizley really improved his vocals and the rhythm section is the best it's ever been, with some really impressive lockstep moments. I also was really impressed with how much Gina adds to the formula

"Blue imho, is their pinnacle and boy does its production make my ears hurt.."
blue sounds great wat???

A little while ago in the Purple thread there were a handful of "Red is the only well-produced Baroness album" hot takes that made my eyes bleed
|
| |
Glad to see the high rating already. Looking forward to playing this. Waiting for that mood.

i mean i've been listening to blue album for years and it's always sounded like standard modern metal with decent production to me

Not really into these guys, but the single sounded pretty good. I didn't mind the loudness that much either

3 tracks in, I don't think I can listen to this anymore. Whoever clipped this record to death needs to be shot at. I would've enjoyed the massive soaring hooks more if my ears weren't being attacked by those sharp flattened peaks every time the drums crashes in. Not worth a full listen unless you're using $10 earbuds and want to develop a tinnitus.

Probably gonna listen to this album with the volume set at about half of what I normally would use for the sake of my ears
Also tbh they've had shitty production that sounds equal parts compressed and completely blown out since Blue, it's just gotten slightly worse on each album until the new low here.

@Odal Great review! Though I agree with Pikazilla that it reads like a lower rating, even a 3.5/3

@camiloG Thank you so much (: My rating might be a bit generous considering the contents of the review, but I just had to give it a positive tilt from how often I've been returning to this and how much fun I've been having with it. If the mix was even slightly better, I probably wouldn't have mentioned it

Having seen these guys live, I will say this. If they are anywhere near you, GO.

^+1, judging by their mixing choices as of late that's the best thing anyone could do to enjoy them. Their albums might sound like the most absolute crap, but their live mix and performances are usually top notch.

All these album covers look so cool. I want to like it for that reason alone. Guess I'll find out soon enough... though they most certainly are stylistically different than anything I listen to :I

Will also confirm, their live shows are great. Their recent tour with Deafheaven and Zeal and Ardor was one of the best concerts I've been to in a long time

Album Rating: 2.5
Positive: The most experimental thing they've ever recorded, many well done quieter parts, John's voice at its best, good vocal harmonies, best bass lines to date.
Negative: it sounds like fucking ass.
Probably gonna be a 2.5. I'm being harsh, but this record is just irritating.

Ooh they just put out a K! Pit performance, might just rip the audio and pretend the live recordings are the actual tracks.
