Honestly after giving this some more spins, the riffs here are pretty fucking great. The opening track especially is just awesome. Willets is definitely missed though

"war focused lyrics put them apart from the hordes of gore obsessed death metal acts who often seemed more concerned with shock value than crafting good songs"
like Cannibal? Who are the hordes, or is it just them, representing the hordes of zombies :P

I imagine that when this came out it gave the impression that Bolt Thrower was stuck on the Mercenary sound and they're running out of ideas. The guitar tone sounds identical and a lot of the riffs bear that resemblance.
This to say that it's all the more impressive they put out Those Once Loyal that ended up blowing the previous two records out of the water

Yea what a way to go out with that album

main problem with this album are the vocals, otherwise slaps as always

Agreed and I like his vocals in Benediction. Karl is just too essential to the Bolt Thrower sound
|
| |
Vocals just sound too "weak" compared to Karl even though they're kinda in the ballpark

Even their "worst" album is good
