I like the instrumentals but there’s a lotttt of lyrical filler on Oxnard. Lots of songs about how he got paid and is wylin now which is fun for a few songs but when your album before was full of earnest storytelling about your life it wears thin, especially 14 tracks of it. On top of that, aside from one or two tracks it was almost completely devoid of his more smooth soulful side which is my favorite part of his music. That’s not to say it doesn’t have some absolute bangers on it, but comparatively to everything else it’s just very one dimensional and dry

yeah this is right up there with Malibu...so happy this got a review and a fantastic one at that Row. instrumentation is prime on here, so silky and full of life it's really a breath of fresh air to listen to

Hey thanks man, appreciate it and agreed
I don't even hate Oxnard for the record, I was actually defending it when it dropped. Just found it a useful comparison to show how Ventura existed in light of that album. Both have bangers

This man so damn talented. Reminds me of a younger but better Lupe Fiasco.

It has a few songs I really enjoy but it’s definitely before he hit his stride. The production is really weird and doesn’t really fit with him too well on a lot of it in my opinion.

yeah production rly sucks on Venice, I heard I think DRUGS or whatever live and really really dug it but then when I went to check that album I didn't fuck with the studio version

Is it weird that Jet Black is my favourite? Reminds me of All Night from Coloring Book, it's just a great poppy late track.

feel like the perfect showcase for this guy is live performance videos where he does the first verse and chorus of his song normally and then breaks out and solos on the drums and lets the rest of his band take over cos they rule too
his drumming is incredible, just wish he was more playful with it on this album. Make it Better is gorgeous anyway, just can't really relax to this album because there's too much virtuoso, super-expressive stuff going on and not necessarily enough space for it all to sit in. ear gets sugar poisoning after like fifteen minutes

Was kind of disappointed he isn’t drumming on the free nationals album but I guess he’s just too busy

I was shopping groceries in a local super market the other day, and suddenly speakers started echoing “Make It Better”.
This guy’s sound is recognizable from a mile away.
