glad you're digging, boney

with Big Thief exploding like they have on this site, I figured it was only a matter of time before people starting giving her solo stuff the attention it deserves :]

This is nice and all but I'm actually not getting a whole ton out of it. It could just be my prior experience with the songs from UFOF but "Terminal Paradise" and "From" feel like the most substantial pieces here, and these versions are just as good as those on UFOF, but I'm not really connecting with anything else, and having those two songs frontloaded doesn't help.

"I'm actually not getting a whole ton out of it. It could just be my prior experience with the songs from UFOF but "Terminal Paradise" and "From" feel like the most substantial pieces here" -- Agreed that those are two of the best here (I actually prefer these versions slightly), but reckon Symbol, Blue and Red Horses, and the t/t are on par. Also, her vocals on Out of your Mind are stupid good.

Think she might be my pick for best singer out right now when you factor ability, melodies and lyrics

I think this is her best, but also -- I generally prefer singer-songwriter music to bands, and I'm not head over heels over BT's rockier stuff.

Oh, and if I still love this in a few months it'll be top five favourites ever probably.

Do you really have this above Phoebe Bridgers now??

Oh man, not even comparable. I think Adrianne is a much better songwriter, one of the best in the indie folk scene. Better than Julien, too, who is my favourite artist ever, though who I wish would lean into the folk and isn't all that comparable in terms of sound.

Uh, I'm not really sold on Lenker as a songwriter, I think her strength lies more in her singing and melodies. Bridgers (and others like her) is absolutely a better lyricist.

Whoa, really? Adrianne loves to blur fiction and autobiography in a really interesting way, I think, and isn't afraid to string seeming nonsense together that sounds beautiful. A lot of interesting imagery as a result. She also sings about sex and relationships in a really warm and often complex way. Definitely a stylistic preference, ultimately, but I also think Adrianne's songwriting is far more dynamic -- it's insane how much ground is covered over BT's catalogue, and even how much From and Terminal Paradise change between this and UFOF. I like Bridgers a lot, but she has a habit of writing the same song over and over again (which isn't a bad thing), and her lyrics strike me as typical indie folk fare. Which again, is a stylistic thing, but I think Adrianne is far more developed.

That's fair, and yeah it's probably a stylistic thing - I generally much prefer "direct"/narrative style lyrics to more abstract stuff. I do like Lenker's abstract style on occasion but I think it's kind of hit or miss; often it seems (like you say) that she's more interested in how the words sound than with constructing anything particularly coherent with them or with "cleverness", per se.

As much as I love Bridgers I think Lenker is the better lyricist
