Really love basically everything about this. Yellow Bike, Quietest Friend, Black Canyon, and My Phoenix are all the quality records I love from the band.

“I tried eternity and a couple other drugs” is a phenomenal line on my least favorite song of the record lol. Quietest Friend has become one of my fav Pedro songs in general tho

Yes, such a good line! That, the start of Black Canyon, and the chorus of Quietest Friend are my favourite moments, perhaps.

Kinda sounds like really lackadaisical pop punk/indie pop, which isn't too much of a bad thing I guess. I'm only familiar with the first album and the following EP, and this seems like a pretty big departure from the sound they had that I adored. This isn't bad so far, it just sounds a bit generic and tired. Good in its own right, but it should have been made in like 2008 or something. Seems a bit like its trying to emulate pop music the best it can, and just falling short. I'm only like 5 songs in but I've yet to experience a 'wow' moment. Maybe something will click.

Also, am I crazy or does he, and the music at times, kinda sound like Springsteen? This is not a complaint, I actually really like how his voice has aged

This resembles more his later songwriting, I think, which was always deceptively simple. That simplicity allows little switch ups and oddities to have a greater effect -- the same is true of his vocals and especially his lyrics. But also, if you don't buy into the catchiness of his melodies it might be a bit of a struggle. I'd definitely check his second and third albums, they're like this though with a stronger, or more apparent narrative attached.

wait, hold up, its really growing on me. Circle K is really fucking good, and so is Quietest Friend. The first half of the album is growing on me as well. Fantastically transparent lyrics

We could write me some reminders
I'd memorize them
I could sing them to myself
And whoever's listening
I could put them on a record
About my hometown
Sitting here with pen and paper
I'm listening now

"Black Canyon" is the first 5/5 song of 2019 imo, unless I'm missing something (which could very well be the case)

Another great addition to Dave Bazan's discography. Some songs on here are could stand toe to toe with some of his best. I didn't realize how much I missed the full band sound until I listened to this record.

Seriously, this is a great album. Glad to see Pedro back, this is might be there best album since Control.

I had to stop it halfway through, just found it really uninteresting. There's a few neat lyrical bits but I kinda hate Bazan's vocals here, and musically it's extremely forgettable.

It's a grower for sure, give it a couple more chances. It took me until about the 3rd listen to see the beauty in the songs. Tell me you at least heard Model Homes, Circle K, and Black Canyon. All three of those songs are masterpieces that stack up against all pedro songs

when did this happen?

See, I haven't ever really listened to Pedro before besides a couple tracks off of Control, which I thought were pretty great. These ones feel a lot more generic to me.
