I like Once Was Not also but yeah these past two EPs have been fuckin fire

I'd be down to see what they do since even the tomes have been pretty varied in pace

i like these EPs more than anything else from after Whisper Supremacy. self titled had some good moments, especially the guitar solos cus Jon Levasseur is a nutcase but they seem far more sure of their direction with this one. fits nicely into the more mainstream end of deathgrind like Aborted imo

They’re def going back in the right direction.

Wouldn't really say this is 'mainstream' deathgrind.
Far more savage than bands like Cattle Decap and Aborted imo.

I think it's more aggressive than Aborted for sure, but the style is more like them than the more tech-death stuff from after Whisper Supremacy
Biggest change here I think is the pacing, which feels way more fast paced and neatly arranged

Yeah that’s a perfect description really man.
It’s unhinged whilst still feeling kinda organised.
That opening riff in Fear His Displeasure gets me soooooo pumped m/

the individual parts are as crazy and frantic as ever but they're arranged more efficiently

They're definitely not trying to compete with their NSV era, it feels like they've been trying to re-create and evolve their sound from Whisper Supremacy.

Album Rating: 3.5
yeah, they'd probably fail miserably trying to make an NSV 2.0 lol

I mean yeah but like this is the most intense and exciting Cryptopsy has been since then
Raise your ratings, you goddamn heathens

I want to, and I will as soon as they write something as interesting as their 2012 LP. Jon Levasseur was just sooooo much better than their current guitarist.
Also, they said they were going to release a series of EPs to get quality content out more regularly than they have in the past but it was 3 years between book 1 and book 2. So the shortness of these albums makes it hard for me to say they're as good as the s/t as well.

I mean their current guitarist is writing riffs better than anything Levasseur wrote on the s/t.
Still love Levasseur and he's better overall but this dude they've got now is a monster.

The s/t blowz so hard. These EPs are easily the best thing they’ve done in the past decade.

I like it but the production blowssssss.
The production on these 2 Tome EP's has been great, especially this one.
I give massive props to the band, not many groups would've recovered after an album like The Unspoken King.
The songwriting is that interesting I can ignore Matt's average vocals too, all about dem riffs and Flo is still subhuman m/

I think Matt has gotten way better over the years tbh. And I dig the first part a bit more but this is great too.

The first part was great but idk, this is wayyy more savage and memorable.
Eh he sounds ok on a couple of tracks here but he has absolutely no low end in his gutturals.
Should stick to a more mid-range scream, his highs are really good.

I'd have to raise my None So Vile rating too if I raised this again, as good as that album is a lot of tracks blended in with eachother for me, felt like the energy was kept constant to the point of sounding samey as fuck.

It's at a breakneck pace constantly, so I get that.
The riffs are always changing though, band weaves in and out of grooves effortlessly.

Album Rating: 3.5
Yeah. I mostly agree with that 3.5 review of None So Vile at this point. I'll definitely keep listening, since it's probably an album that takes time to appreciate.
