I'll have to start at the beginning of their discography. Right now I just want to keep spinning this on repeat too though, until it satisfies whatever craving.

Their Everything So Far compilation slays, Sowing. It's an eclectic 20+ collection of songs that are nearly all fantastic, and it doesn't have a whole lot of flow but it's just so good it doesn't matter. Get on that shit.

Sowing, I'd suggest grabbing their collective EP "Everything So Far" if you want a handle on their older stuff.
That aside, nice review and I'm glad to see this dropped. I'll give an opinion on the album when I have one.

"This is kind of like my first Pinegrove because I only listened to Cardinal a handful of times before rating it and moving on."
I understand. I wonder if having heard their previous material (Mixtape One and Two are their best IMO) gave me some weird expectations for this. To be honest, I think it's a good album, I just don't "like" it -- for whatever reason. I think it's because nothing sticks out, but I'm not sure why that's the case. I've heard people (on the subreddit) claim the songwriting on here is more "experimental" (relative to their past work, of course) and I don't know if I agree. The songwriting is definitely tighter and more consistent here, and that removes a lot of what I did like about their past material: there were so many shifts -- an almost annoying amount of twists -- in the music, and that made it exciting. Even though I didn't like Then Again on the last album, I found it jarring, it kinda made the album as a whole a better experience for me. Old Friends/New Friends was obviously a way to tie things together, but the album still felt sprawling and disjointed; all the strings were interesting and """profound""" in themselves. This is the opposite of that for me.

I haven't heard this band but I'm not a big fan of Country and I see that is their genre label.

They’re indie rock with country influences but the amount of country shouldn’t be enough to turn off any indie fans.

I would even describe them more as acoustic than country, I don't really see much of the country comparison, apart from the fact the lead singer can have a twangy voice from time to time that I feel could be described as emo as much as country.

So there's no songs about farming or ridin round in a pickup truck drinking whisky? I'm only two songs in.
