Yeah, this is probably their worst but has some fantastic moments and WOAH I haven't rated it

The Stain is still an incredible track, main problem here is that there's cohesion through the whole thing and they haven't mastered their ability to use interesting and unusual sounds whilst maintaining solid songwriting yet.

Yeah, the structuring is pretty straightforward on the whole, and a lot of the tracks aren't that unusual (Sleepytime, Ambugaton). Powerless is a pretty good indication of the sound they'd come to master though.

Oddly Ambugation is my 2nd fav here despite it being a simple track, it does it so well.

Ambugaton absolutely rips
I'm biased as hell but I think this album rules

Ya this is probably their best. Don't know why Calc doesn't enjoy this more. Even though they became even more experimental after this, this has the hardest banging tracks.

Because compared to the later albums this is just throwing ideas at a wall and see what sticks. Sure some tracks are bangers like Ambugation and The Stain but the others albums feel much more of a cohesive piece of work rather than just a bunch of tracks. Also even without the later two albums being so good and push the boundaries more, this falters in many parts. Sleep Is Wrong has each individual segment too long and a groove that gets boring fast, Sunflower is...well nothing and Sleepytime takes too long to get going with a payoff that isn't deserve of the time you waited for it.

Well I basically disagree with everything you said lol. Sleep is wrong is the perfect length to me. None of their albums feel very cohesive to me, but to each his own. I actually thought sunflower was a good interlude even though it wasnt really a song in the strictest sense.

Natural history is their best, but this is still better than their third album. I think Glorious Times has their best songs, but it also sounds the least like an 'album' cohesively. All three of them are just about equal quality for me though.

I think pretty much the opposite lol Glorious Times is nearly as cohesive as Natural History for me. Reading some of the band's thoughts in the CD booklet, the samples of Nils' brother and how the songs transition to each other makes it such a great experience start to finish. Especially with the first 3 songs, the first 2 being so huge and gigantic and then the 3rd one gives a more atmospheric transition to the next track, like some form of breathing room from the onslaught but it still keeps you on edge.

1997 is one of the few songs I find laugh out loud hilarious...in a good way.

I love how 1997 is simultaneously butt rock and one of the most bat shit insane songs I’ve ever heard.
