I wouldn't say her earlier stuff had "forthright cynicism", they certainly aren't as uniformly positive as this is but I don't see how you can call songs like "Follow Your Arrow" or "Biscuits" cynical.

Agreed, it's a very well balanced record, can't say the last time where I listened to a record where the backing music has the perfect stage presence, it's there, it's great but at no point does it overpower Kacey's voice and it's just very very well balanced.
