Well Ollie, interviews provide information directly from the source. This is A7X telling you what their hoping to achieve through the album. I'm comparing my observations to A7X's statements. I'm not judging the entire album from those statements. I'm simply explaining what their intentions were initially and this is what we actually get. I think it's fair to include statements as credible information. The line you mentioned is directed at the ballads. I don't feel like they were written in a convincing way. Consider Tool's "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days" as a metal ballad. These two songs (which are sequels) are about MJK's deceased mother. The atmosphere and tone reflect a travesty. When you hear the lyrics, you feel the anger at God, life, and circumstance. You can sense the genuine emotion of MJK as he tells you her story. She never lost faith when everyone, including Keenan, lost long ago. He is appalled yet inspired by her perseverance and faith.
Obviously comparing Tool to A7X is asking for trouble, but for the sake of this comment, account those examples when you critique any ballad on this album. What song feels anything close to that? No ballad is orchestrated to make a listener feel anything substantial. Most are formulaic, dry, and emotionless.
