just listening to this. that first song has the most awkward transitions ever, and the verse riff is whatever, but the chorus is classic In Vain, awesome melody. Blood We Shed is playing rn, that proggy interlude is awesome haha. still not the best flow, but it's enjoyable.
update: wow En Forgangen Tid is amazing! Origin seems great so far too. it's almost like I'm listening to a different album now tho lol.
update: the closer is excellent too. so yea, the first third of the album is a bit weak, tho it has its moments, but from the 4th track onward it's really solid. fair bit of experimentation on the album too, which had more of miss than hit moments for me, but overall it's an enjoyable listen. not nearly as consistent or memorable as Aenigma tho, feels like a 3.2-3.3. eh I guess I'm gonna round it up.

Loads of reviewers and raters (for lack of a better word) on Sputnik don't listen to albums properly before judging them. That said In Vain have massively toned down the complexity and darkness of their stuff (ala the first album) in favour of more simple, catchy stuff (as shown partly by getting Matt fucking Heafy on here...). I still like them a lot but think the first album is the best.

tbh this is pretty dull

On their facebook they just annnounced that the special edition is now available also on digital platforms. I highly recommend that you listen to this one before you pass your judgement. IMO the two extra tracks are classic In Vain style, really long with plenty of riffs and progressiveness. Gives a totally different character to the whole album and balances really well with the shorter songs.
I also agree that there are some shorter songs and I like them as well. Not all songs can be 7-8 mins and with 20 riffs...

an album truely in vain

they kinda messed up by not swapping out some of the weaker proper tracks here for the bonus tracks. Quiet Flows The Scheldt is a lot better than the first track, for example.

Great review man. I agree with most of your points.
My first listen was a real disappointment, even though I enjoyed the second half of it more. Listening to it for the second time now, I'm enjoying it much more and I think it will keep on growing on me with further listens. I'd say 3.5 for the time being
Some passages are really awkward though. On Blood We Shed for instance, the organ section + clean chorus is great but the transition from the beefy death metal riffs is poor.

It's very disappointing that they went with the standard/special edition option with this album. The two songs on the special edition version are truly amazing. They more than make up for the couple slightly lackluster tracks. Ghost Path has some really cool moments.
When you listen to the special edition in its entirety this album truly feels like a solid In Vain album. And it is true that the special edition is on Spotify, and it isn't labelled as the special edition.
The closer goes hard, too. Very satisfying.

Just stumbled upon the two bonus tracks that are only on the Limited Edition - Ghost Path's just alright but And Quiet Flows the Scheldt is incredible, why would you ever think it a good idea to not include it on the regular tracklist? Such a shame.

'PREPRODUCTION OF NEW IN VAIN ALBUM
We are pleased to announced that the preproduction of our next album is well underway. So far we have recorded guitars for about 8 tracks and there are still a few to go. Vocals and bass up next. We hope to complete the songwriting of a couple of more songs as well. Despite being in the early phase we are already seeing the contours of a monster album in the making!'

Album absolutely rules. Seekers of the Truth, the Matt Heafy one, right down to the closer Standing on the Ground of Mammoths. My prob best of 2018

New In Vain single needs a “Music News” post. Supposedly there’s a way for anyone to create them but I dunno how.
