Peace Sign and Raining are my two favourites, too(!!!). Only real problems I have with this album is sometimes the effect (some kind of autotune / pitch correction?) on Brian's voice can be a little grating, particularly in the chorus of Trampoline or Far Drive, both of which I like a lot, when the instrumental is somewhat stripped back.

Yeah I agree. I think you've just got to roll with it and accept that's something they want as a part of their sound now, and when you embrace the record's blemishes it becomes all the more enjoyable

On one hand, I do sympathise with fans who dislike this album. In a sense, the band did shoot themselves in the foot by releasing three albums very, very similar in style, and then choosing to switch it up on their second release with a major label. But then again, I 1) obviously think this is very good, even better than their previous release, and 2) think the core of this album's sound and songwriting isn't too dissimilar to what it's been in the past: I'd argue to an extent that it's been improved. Of course, there's nothing wrong with disliking the album or its sound, but to argue that the band have sold out, or that this is - in any way - pandering to the masses is kind of ridiculous. I think Back On Top, and maybe even Talon of the Hawk to a lesser extent, was safer than this. Its production was cleaner, and there was nothing even close to as potentially grating as 'Don't Fill Up On Chips'. Brian still refuses to sing in tune a lot of the time on this album, despite all the pitch correction and subtle vocal manipulation. I can't imagine anyone not having liked the band's previous album, and then suddenly switching to this and deciding the band are the best thing ever.
Besides, the sound of this is in many ways crucial to the potency of its themes.

Cheers man.
And agreed with pretty much everything you said Blush. In fact, I love how poppy this is whilst also not feeling for a second like they are selling out; it feels like the change up is just for them, just what they wanted to do with their sound.

I think parallels can be drawn between what they've done here and what Enter Shikari have done with their latest record, adopting a softer, gentler sound with great results

Great review man, used to be really into these guys but don't know if I'll even check this one

Cheers friendo. If anything I said in the review sounds remotely pleasant to you I'd definitely give it a whirl, especially as its such a short project relatively speaking. The singles are as good a place to start as any to be honest if you just want to dip your toes in (Vacation Town and Raining)

When you realise the crew you roll with
Is actually what makes you nervous
This album's quite the grower. As with the rest of their work, it gets better with familiarity.

Exactly. Almost considering a 4 for this, just because it's such a comfortable listen for me already.

Not a bad idea, actually, I might 4 it for a little while as well, been listening to it quite a lot.

This feels completely uninspired and boring to me. Love all their previous work and thought Back On Top was the perfect summer record but there are really few memorable melodies or interesting ideas here. Bae, The Grand Finale and Everyone But You are cool but the rest is pretty dull.

That sucks, man. I adore the s/t, but thought the band had gone through a bit of a decline since - this album's revitalised a love for them, and I think it has some of their best songs on it. It's also their most cohesive; the way Ocean leads back into Holy Fuck is perfect and makes this one of the easiest listens this year. Only song I don't dig, I think, is Trampoline, not a fan of the vocals on that song, and whatever effect is on his voice.
Peace Sign, Bae, Grand Finale, Raining and Everyone But You are all top-tier TFB IMO.

"I grew a gap between my teeth
I grew a crack where I was standing
You never wanted to have kids
You never wanted to get married
But "C'est la vie!", Tommy told me
That "It hurts but it's good!
No matter how bad, it's always good!"
some of their best lyrics imo. y'all fucking up with that rating avg
