i'm the fussy production dork and i think the production on this isn't so bad. i'm not so keen on the drums sounding a bit confined and flat but otherwise it sounds fine.
i'm being a little harsh with my rating too, i like it more with every single listen. tracks 2 and 5 are real highlights. definitely better than celestial lineage.

I'm generally a stickler for production as well, but I fall more into the undying hatred for unnecessary loudness and poor snare choices (: I definitely prefer this to Celestial Lineage. CL felt lazy to me.

this feels more like what cl wanted to be - tense, grander, less held back. i like how they went for a really concise delivery on this album too. bumping rating.

Comparing this to the productionbacklash Ash Borer got last fall, but this record is considerably better.

I'd be tempted to argue that point with you if I could actually be tempted to listen to Irrepassable Boredom again.

I agree that this record isn't what I'd call a "grower." Diadem and Two Hunters were rather dense and rewarded repeated listens in my opinion, Thrice being rather straight forward and concise. I felt the same way after my fifth and sixth listen as I did my first, not that that detracts in anyway.
Reading these comments on The Irrepassable Gate remind me that I've had the CD sitting on my shelf for about six months now and still haven't listened to it. I'll have to get on that. I really enjoyed their first two records.

if you liked the tinny sound here and the tinny sound on Cold of Ages you'll probably like Boring Gate of Notpassingness. Not that that album actually sounds like either of the others, but it's not got great production either.

The Irrepressable Gate really grew on me actually. Yeah the production isn't as great as their self titled debut (nothing in BM sounds as great as that IMO), but it never bothered me like its bothering me on Thrice Woven.
Ash Borer's self titled debut album has my favorite sound in black metal history. Has a very noticeable low end/bassy feel to it, giving the record a massive sound. On top of that it manages to have a very low-fi/raw/ sound as well, idk how they did it.

they remastered the cassette, that's how :p Original cassette rip I had sounded really trebly and raw, with a panicky sound. The remastered CD version has that nice heaviness to it but both are great.
"bruh do u even like black metal"
i mean there's lofi drum sound and then there's just being bad at mixing. Loudness War affects everything for the worse.

drums don't sound great, but i like how everything else sounds. a little rawer than maybe CL. Album is by far their most varied too, there's plenty of their classic style as well as certain homages to the trailblazers of black metal.

I'm a huge fan of their earlier stuff and this was just so uninspired and boring. They couldn't even keep me intrigued during their doomier moments.

Yeah I really don't understand the knock on the production, I have no problem with it at all.
Also I don't think this is lazy or uninspired in any way either, if anything I would say that would be Celestial Lineage.
