Hell yeah, should be fun.
Edmonton has some cruddy venues. Super cruddy. And they keep closing down. We're the alleged metal capital of Canada, but the problem is we're 3 hours north of Calgary. And when you're looking at dipping north of the border when touring the States (holy crap those guys are lucky for shows!), they MIGHT hit Calgary, hit Vancouver, probably-not Regina, definitely Toronto, and then that's it. It's about whatever's closest to the US border unfortunately. We're a capital city, thank god, so we get a decent amount, but miss out all the time. Like, Coheed hasn't been here in over a decade, I'm still waiting to see Opeth because I'm not sure they've ever been here....it sucks. So now I'm at the point of just savoring any solid metal act I can.
I mean it could be worse, I know a lot of people have to travel to different cities regularly to see a good show. But Canada is fucking maaaaaassive, and a drive to another city for a show usually means a plane ride.
But I discovered this little place in downtown Edmonton that's surrounded by parking lots (Edmonton sucks to drive in and parking is grossly overpriced and sparse) and a nasty little pizza joint, and it's at the edge of the city, so I can drive there with relative ease, park a 20-second walk from the venue's front door, and still have enough open air, free space, and cover of darkness to spark a couple joints between sets no issue. I mean the area is often swarmed by aggressively-drunk homeless and there's the occasional stabbing, but w/e
My options are that place.....and a venue that used to be a club, so it's an open-concept disaster that requires human barricading for set change-overs, and there's no re-entry, and they funnel you into a little prison-like concrete-walled smoking area where security glares at you and just dares you to show a drug. Fuuuuuck off.
BUT THESE GUYS ARE PLAYING VENUE #1. THANK GOD. I'll see anything there. Wooo end of the month!
