I appreciate the impact of the album, many of my favorite bands adore this album. At the same time, though, what really matters is the impact the album has on the listener. And for me, that is nowhere to be found.

origin analysis is fun, but there's too much of that crap surrounding this album. That and the whole legend of Refused's final show. there's more talk of what this album meant for hardcore and future bands than there is about the album itself. and the album itself is fantastic. first heard it around 5 years ago, and the thing is still actually *growing* on me.

Oh I missed a lot of talk here. I never said that Refused was the sole influence on Glassjaw and Thrice, but that if those bands listened to The Shape... pre-composition, that'd no surprise to me. Their music reeks of what Refused aspired to do.

It's funny to me that people are arguing that this album is all about "feeling." That it comes down to pure subjectivity. I think the way this album has risen to its cult-like status is by people (aka critics) claiming it has some objective edge over other albums. As in, that classic Refused pretentiousness actually pays off in artistic ways as opposed to some kind of personal connection to the listener or the vibe or the ill flows or something. This sentiment seems really contrary to what I feel like people (aka critics) say. In the words of one particular critic...
The Shape Of Punk To Come is more than just epic sound, it's an epic idea.
The Shape... is often treated as an artistic concept more than a collection of music, which totally contrasts what you guys are saying. Not to discount your personal connection to the music or anything since that's totally on your own subjectivity, but it's just interesting. This is honestly the first time I've heard people talk about the "feeling" of the album as its most valuable asset. Surprising. I guess maybe I also have similar thoughts. I don't buy the "revolutionary" quality of this album, so the only way I really connect to it now is by asking the question, "does it rip or not." So where I'm at is no it's ripping at a 5/5 level. I had always assumed the 5s are for the larger picture behind the album and not just the feeling.

But then again I'm a robot and don't have feelings.

Increase the peace.

I don't think this will ever be more than a three to me. Tannhauser is a great track, but the rest just don't do anything for me.
