I say these 2 albums aren't the best place to start but if the review got you to check them mission accomplished.

Used to not like this one as much as other Buck-Tick albums, but I've really come to love it over the years. Tracks that were originally not favourites, like Sid Vicious on the Beach and GIRL have become some of my go to tracks from this era of the band. Deserves more love!

Mona Lisa Overdrive -Xanadu- is one of their best concerts, especially the second half (that Taiyou ni Korosareta performance is jaw dropping). That and Warp Days... such a great era

fuck me, Mona Lisa and GIRL is a combo

GIRL is maybe the most catchy song they have ever written (minus Romance) and Mona Lisa is max Imai s a s s. Pure gold. Black Cherry remains my favorite, and Monster is astronomically improved live to become my favorite if you count that.

Hmm I'm really not vibing Black Cherry so far ngl :[ very much enjoying how 21st Cherry Boy on Kyokutou feels like a sneak peak at this before the rest of that alb kicks in

Ah yes I believe it was a distant inspiration

No it's named after William Gibson's book Mona Lisa Overdrive, which inspired the band's cyberpunk era.

ok thanks

@Johnny: But that r i f f doe, so sultry. Personally I much prefer listening to Mona first then Kyokutou. It's an infinite loop there's no intended order but Kyokutou offers such an emotional climax to top everything off. Starting with this is like being stuck in cyber dystopia and then at the half way point you're ascended into the clouds with Shippuu no Blade Runner leading to an emotional climax, much more satisfying.

Yeah, I went in that way round and am v glad for it - can't imagine what it was like hearing Mona Lisa as a follow-up back in the day, Kyokutou feels like a much smoother transition out of the cyberpunk days. Any reason they went for that way round?

It was originally intended as a double album but that didn't happen. So, they promoted it as entirely separate ones. As for why it was the way round it was, I don't know by memory. Would have to dig up translated interviews of that time period.

Ah fair - kinda glad it turned out this way, they work nicely as independent complements. Would have been weird packing all that into one release

Yeah I like the way it was done too. Not just for the reason you said, but it allowed two different touring cycles. Kyokutou's looked more futuristic while the Mona Lisa tours had smaller venues and was their largest tour cycle ever. The energy was wild.
