Kind of disappointed by some of Schuylar's lyrics lately. There were some pretty bad lines on Heavy Fruit and then the cringey line in Air Raid "She is out of breath And the door of death." Like, c'mon.

These dudes are basically from my backyard. I've only heard Heavy Fruit and it was great. Gonna spin this.

fair points. maybe they just moved in a direction i don't appreciate as much.
re: vocal intensity, you're right to indicate that it still exists. but i feel like they went from having things build to critical mass on almost every track to only periodically indulging the Energy.
the drums are 100% okay, they're just very obviously stylistically puzzle-piece compared to the way things were before. like, here:

this kind of absurd unpredictable madness. and the fact that the new guy seems to get caught up in his own grooves. they still groove. i'm just used to shifting forcefully and sometimes even abruptly from one groove to the next.
again, still gonna keep hammering away at this. HIL records even in the past have often taken a while to grow on me properly. hopefully i gain some new understanding in the coming days.

'It Hates You' is incredible, tied with 'I Am Hollywood' as my favorite album by the band (and I listen to it a lot more now). I think it's their sweet spot--southern, but experimental, and above all catchy as all motherfucking hell.
I've been spinning few. a bit now, but I think it'll have to grow on my like 'Heavy Fruit' did.
|
| |
certainly the worst band ive ever heard
|
| |
'Honestly, I think this is the best thing they've done since I Am Hollywood.'
Just when I thought I wasn't interested, you go and say something like this.

Seriously, this is worth listening to. I accept they're never gonna make another I Am Hollywood. If this is the style they're going for now, I think they fucking nailed it. It's miles better than It Hates You and Heavy Fruit.

what the hell Ryus they rock ahrd

like Rockruff

Man. Schuyler is goddamned awesome. I don't think I'd like this band half as much without him.

"Seriously, this is worth listening to. I accept they're never gonna make another I Am Hollywood. If this is the style they're going for now"
I mean it's only been 13 or so years since they changed lol

Never really listened to these guys. Sweet riffs man, definitely enjoying this so far. I think they could need some screams though. That'd be awesome.
EDIT: Nevermind, just listened to some of their older stuff which has screams.

yeah the lead singer is over screaming

@Calc Yeah, and it took 13 years to make a truly great album in this style. Like I said, I'm just glad they finally nailed it.

I've come to the conclusion that this rules hard.
|
| |
My research points towards the same.

It Hates You is my favorite release from them, but this is still consistent with the rest of their discography in terms of quality.
