"i don't think anyone has ever mentioned the lyrics in an opeth review
seriously though they were never great at all, just metal af"
Really? Idk, I absolutely love Opeth'a old lyrics. Based on albums like Still Life and My Arms Your Hearse, Mikael is one of my favorite rock lyricists out there

Yes, Opeth's lyrics up to Ghost Reveries were amazing! With Watershed they started to decline.

Yeah, as much as I adore Watershed, I'd say the lyrics are the low point of that album

I remember "Porcelain Hear" being lyrically imprsssive.

Actually, I thought that was one of the worst lyricallly. Heir Apparent probably had the best imo

I'd say Heir Apparent or Lotus Eater have the best lyrics, even though Hessian Peel is definitely the best song on there imo (and one of their best in general). I agree that Porcelain Heart probably has the worst. After all, it has lines like "I wrote down a name and read it twice".

Yeah, I forgot about mentioning Hessian Peel. That's probably my favorite song on Watershed, actually

"Still life is probably their closest to being mostly extreme metal imo althoug I guess the demo counts too (I don't consider it a major part of their discography though)"
Personally I'd say My Arms Your Hearse is their most extreme metal-influenced, although Still Life is up there too. But that was when the prog metal elements really started taking more precedence over the band's sound

Still Life has a lot of jazzy, blues-y and proggy moments. I think they have 5 albums that are (way) more extreme in their approach (Orchid, Morningrise, MAYH, Blackwater Park more or less and Deliverance).
