Can anyone recommend any classics from this genre? Struggling to determine whether this is bad or I just don't understand the genre yet as I have no frame of reference

check Swallow the Sun - The Morning Never Came
Novembers Doom are pretty unremarkable, imo.

Album Rating: 3.5 | Sound Off
Ahab-Call of the Wretched Sea (heavier, more guttural funeral doom)
Candlemass-Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (classic, sabbath inspired doom)
Solstice-New Dark Ages (epic doom metal)
My Dying Bride-Turn Loose the Swans (Traditional doom, most depressing sound in my opinion)
Katatonia-The Great Cold Distance (More streamlined doom. Consistently amazing still)
Draconian-Where Lovers Mourn (Melodic death inspired doom)
Swallow the Suns-The Morning Never Came (same deal as Draconian)
Black Sabbath-Any of the highly rated albums although their first is my personal favorite (Classic metal/doom)
Funeral-Tragedies (funeral doom)
Thergothon-Stream From the Heavens (same deal as above)

Also Saint Vitus, Cathedral, Worship and Paradise Lost are pretty big although I never heavily listened to them.

I'm making a convert out of you :p Tbh Agalloch is about as far removed from metal as metal gets so we'll see how this goes
|

yea, I don't think I'll be jamming anything drastic anytime soon.. but still, getting a cool new rec from an unexplored genre is the best point of sites like these..

@asleep were you asking about this specific kind of doom metal or just recs for doom in general?

Well he said classics for this genre so I imagined he meant Doom in its entirety. I put genre tags/descriptions just in case though.

You are right, it rules. I'll listen to them a lot more later. This among the much more depressive vein like Thergothon imo and I like it.

Ahab-Call of the Wretched Sea (heavier, more guttural funeral doom)
Not their best though
Candlemass-Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (classic, sabbath inspired doom)
Yes it is
Solstice-New Dark Ages (epic doom metal)
Great rec
My Dying Bride-Turn Loose the Swans (Traditional doom, most depressing sound in my opinion)
Cool, but not that depressing.
Katatonia-The Great Cold Distance (More streamlined doom. Consistently amazing still)
Not doom at all
Draconian-Where Lovers Mourn (Melodic death inspired doom)
Band sucks dick
Swallow the Suns-The Morning Never Came (same deal as Draconian)
Great album, unlike Draconian they aren't Gothic/Doom
Black Sabbath-Any of the highly rated albums although their first is my personal favorite (Classic metal/doom)
Influential for doom but not really part of the sub-genre
Funeral-Tragedies (funeral doom)
Not Funeral Doom. Kinda boring album. Demo's better and closer to Funeral Doom though.

Katatonias really hard to pin down exactly, I was kind of stretching it their which is why I said more streamlined Doom. They self-define themselves as Dark metal I believe.

Their early records are pretty heavy on the Doom influence. More recent ones not quite as much but it's definitely still there.
