I haven't read a lot about the characters but from what I can tell, Mike is often painted as the villain but sometimes his realness might have been effective against Brian's perfectionism
Nowadays he does come across as a proper bellend but I'm not going to rail against an 80yo

only just put on the SOS boxset for this era and damn, Oh Sweet Something is a heater. continuing the tradition of all the best Blondie/Ricky songs getting left off lmao

lately been jamming this as a double album sort of in the vision that jack wanted this to be. been tweaking it gradually on my commute this week but so far ive stabilized around
side a:
1. mount vernon and fairway theme
2. sail on sailor
3. steamboat
4. we got love
5. oh sweet something
side b:
6. better get back in bed
7. the trader
8. hard time
9. leaving this town
10. all of my love/ecology (bit anachronistic but i needed another dennis song and this keeps with his tradition of using scrapped solo songs for beach boys records)
side c:
11. i'm the pied piper
12. california saga i big sur
13. california saga ii the beaks of eagles
14. california saga iii california
15. out in the country v1
16. out in the country v2 (ninja edit between the two of them that seamlessly connects them)
side d
17. only with you
18. carry me home
19. radio king dom
20. funky pretty
spliced out the instrumentals for the mt vernon stuff by just doing some audacity edits of the fairy tale music which work as nice transition pieces

interesting tracklist, I didn't know Jack wanted this to be a double
def agree with Hard Time, We Got Love and Carry making the cut, some of the best shit from these sessions. but Oh Sweet Something is CATP era isn't it?

it was initially tracked then but jack seemed to suggest they considered both it and country for holland as well, which doesnt rlly surprise me given they often held onto leftover songs for a few cycles at least. i had both of them on catp at first but i kinda dig them more here. think california saga's almost southern-y vibe helps them fit in
