Countries like Greece, Finland and Brazil were some of the most important to black metal. Mayhem were the earliest Norwegian band to contribute but Darkthrone, Burzum and Emperor were all upwards of 5 years late to the party

Yeah I suppose, but i'm mostly just saying those are the big guns. There are very few black metal bands of their level outside of their own country. I mean really in the end, no one band/scene/country "created" black metal, but some of the biggest influences definitely came from Norway.

"Even some american black metal has made an impact on the scene"
What are you talking about there are no black metal bands in the US

Also I know Greece has bands like Rotting Christ, don't really know much from Brazil.
|
| |
You're over-dramatizing the importance of Brazil but yes, Greece was very important
|
| |
Nope. Brazil single handedly influenced Mayhem more than anybody else, and they had the highest number of extreme and influential bands compared to any other country.
The US had Profanatica early on, another big innovator in bm

This is actually a really interesting article I came upon, basically talks about the importance of greek black metal and what makes it special in its own right-http://www.metalinjection.net/black-metal-history-month/up-from-the-chthonic-depths-a-brief-history-of-greek-black-metal

Greek black metal was possibly the smallest but maybe most important sect in developing black metal as we know it today.

From what I read it seems like Greece was actually extremely uptight about religion so spitting in the face of god meant everything to them, like in countries like America and Nordic countries you'll get ridicule but not all that intensely. I think that's really interesting, definitely makes me respect Greek bm more.

"Brazil single handedly influenced Mayhem more than anybody else"
I would've thought Britain, no?
|
| |
Nope. Euronymous was obsessed with the extremity of Brazilian bands and brought Sarcofago and Sepultura into the spotlight with his connections to big underground mags at the time like Metalion's Slayer mag and such. They were also who inspired a lot of the common imagery and even corpse paint (not just King Diamond!) amongst the Norwegians due to Euronymous' obsession with them and his tape trading worldwide.

Oh and Germany were also pretty huge for black metal.
|
| |
Ah fair enough
|

I'm curious, what do you consider to be the first full-fledged BM band/album, first and second wave?
|
| |
Samael - Worship Him
Master's Hammer - Ritual
|
| |
Cool, haven't heard that Samael album, on the list it goes (:

Scuro, thanks for the proof read!
I actually know next to nothing about the old greek black metal scene, got some bands to recommend?

Varathron, Necromantia and Rotting Christ are the most essential black metal trio ever
