Chthe'ilist, Wormed, First Fragment, CB Murdoc, Vale of Pnath, Hannes Grossmann all better than this P.L.E.B.

That all being said, the boys at Alustrium really dig this album based on my interactions with them.

if by not generic you mean they have actual songwriting chops in a genre known for weak songwriting then that's true, but stylistically this sounds like regular ol' tech death to me

Garden variety tech has considerably less ingenuity, focuses more so on solo-ing and guitar wankery rather than using instruments purposefully, and generally lacks any kind of progressive tendency--rather, it remains stagnant and complacent.

As someone who was probably listened to way too much generic tech-death, I can assure you these guys are onto something. Not necessarily GROUNDBREAKING, since people love to hold around that standard, but they're stepping up into a more noteworthy position.

oh don't get me wrong this is a great album (hence the rating). I don't care much for bands being groundbreaking necessarily. I'd much rather a band take a style and refine it like these dudes have. taking those tech elements to write actual good riffs and songs is what makes this stand out to me.

it's not perfect, but for a debut this is impressive - doubly so since I find this style of tech death to be pretty boring most of the time.

Last year was actually fairly okay for underground tech-death. First Fragment, Vale of Pnath, Deviant Process, Zenith Passage, The Ritual Aura, Ordinance all released great stuff. Definitely check if you haven't already

The Zenith Passage was solid and I've been meaning to check out that Vale of Pnath album for a while. kept forgetting about it but I liked their debut. will check out the rest thanks for the recs my dude.

Of course dude. All of those are a solid 4 or above for me so I imagine you'll pick something out that you like a decent amount
