Yeah the Moana soundtrack is really nothing special which is disappointing given that LMM of Hamilton fame wrote the damn thing. You'd think it'd have a couple of bangers.

Anyway though while I love this film if it steals Best Picture from Moonlight I'm throwing hands

I was thinking about reviewing this, but hoped someone else would because I'm not sure how confidently I could tackle it. Movie was amazing, and I typically can't stand musicals. Favorite movie of 2016, from the few I've seen.

it features a talented white musician that wants to bring jazz back to popularity, of course its going to catch some flack

but its about far more than that of course, dismissing it down to just race is really reductive

I get why people would feel its important that race relations be more represented in a movie about jazz, but ultimately complaining about the fact that it leaves it out slightly seems ridiculous from my (admittedly) totally white standpoint

Because ultimately its not even a movie about jazz, its much more about relationships. In fact the jazz circlejerk stuff was sort of off to me in parts; its kind of like in Whiplash where you can't tell how self-aware the movie is about how pretentious its characters are and it sort of lauds being a prick in the service of ~the music mannnnn~ . Ryan Gosling is totally supposed to be a douche, but most of what he says about jazz is played completely straight. But whatever, I definitely don't feel like overthinking small parts of the movie when the majority of the movie is really quite breathtaking

I thought I hated musicals too, but then my girl showed me Once and Sing Street. Really looking forward to watching this one this weekend.
