I didn't think the album was that bad. I agree that it basically sounds like another Owen album, but that doesn't really matter to me tbh. I love Owen, so I enjoy this too, even if it's a bit below his other Owen material.

i think the problem with using the Owen comparison in a review is, for people like me, who haven't heard them, it doesn't mean anything and comes off as a callow critique -- i don't think it's especially astonishing that a Kinsella project bears certain similarities with another Kinsella project.
i don't know if i buy the 'it doesn't sound similar enough to the original' -- especially when, iirc, people were annoyed that MVB (another long-delayed follow-up to a seminal 90's cut) sounded too similar to Loveless without the progression (and fwiw i prefer mbv to Loveless). i don't know. I don't think the writing is bad, but the critical lens of the review could use some adjusting.

"it just doesn’t bring the nostalgia factor oh-so-many (including myself) were anticipating"
This review in a nutshell. I get why a lot of people approach it this way, but that doesn't seem to be what the band were going for. Kinda jusy sounds like a byproduct of the touring and the resulting jams that took place during. Same band got together after a long time, and now we have this album.

I don't get why people expect this. It's kind of like if Zeppelin decided to get back together to write a new album and everyone got disappointed that it didn't sound like Led Zeppelin II.
Of course it's not going to sound the same it's been 17 years, they're not the same people they were back then.

it's not that i expected it to be the same but when you suddenly decide to release an album under the band's label i'd expect it to have the band's trademark identity. this doesn't imo.
i know i let my expectations to affect on my judgement here but hey, music is always subjective
@winesburg i understand what you mean but the thing is, we had very different starting points when coming into this album so i think it's quite presumable we're gonna do the critique from different standpoints

fwiw i don't think this is a 4.5 i have no idea what i'd rate it honestly but if a reviewer was like 'I love this it's like Owen... but better!!' my criticism would be the same
yeah i get you Artuma! again i don't think this is necessarily a bad review! i just think your standpoint is limited (i mean all standpoints are limited #poststructuralismBABEY but u get my point). you're clearly a good writer, i think it's worth challenging yourself beyond 'it doesn't sound how i expected' -- parse the reasons how it doesn't but beyond that conject as to 'why', which is the crux of all reviewing really
