lovely review!

I heard the Walk Off the Earth cover of "Closer" because it was plastered all over Facebook for awhile. Catchy for the first 2 or so listens, but that's about it. I haven't even heard the original.
This does not seem like my thing.

"after all, if closer et all is as undistinguishable from shit radio edm as you say it is, why has closer stayed at the top of the charts so long"
If you look at what also tops the charts, you'll realize people are just dumb.
Album is a hot fucking piece of shit that makes Attila look like David Bowie.

have only heard Closer, but that's enough for me to not even bother with this and stay far away
excellent review Arcade

Closer and Don't Let Me Down are kinda fun. This whole review reads like you have a bias against the guys though.
|
| |
god these guys are so vanilla
|
| |
these songs scrape the bare standards of listenability, in the sense that you can listen to them and agree they are songs

The chorus of Closer just sounds so damn awkward
Who the fuck thought those lyrics would work

disagreed with the whole "#selfie narrative" thing. at the time, ridiculous drops narrated by stupid vocals was a thing. I feel like p4k got it pretty right with what they said about the chainsmokers being cynics. they're very good at knowing what people will want to listen to and making it without an inch of emotion or soul. #selfie is cynical, closer is cynical, roses was cynical (I mean look at the title versus. the featured artist), and cynicism is cool now.
|
| |
except 99.9% of the people who listen to the chainsmokers and genuinely enjoy their music do not view it that way at all, and those said people's overwhelming hatred towards SELFIE is what made these guys change both their genre of choice and approach to songwriting all together. Even if cynicism is a consistent theme, their sound, and the audience's reaction to that sound - are completely different.

| |
closer is a banger tbh, won't listen to anything else from this
|

Poster saying that you can't dance to them is laughable. They put on incredibly fun shows.

@vaxxi
idk if you can say that about #selfie, I feel like a lot of people enjoyed it "ironically" or whatever. I remember my (non-music-nerd) friends would argue about whether or not i was a joke. also was the reception really that bad? I mean obviously people on here and youtube comments and whatnot hated it but people must have liked it (even as a joke) because it was a big seller.
idk I don't think that there's much different between their mindset behind #selfie and their newer stuff. they're just making what sells. that will constantly need adjusting their sound, but the audience is reacting relatively similarly. I've seen just as much hate for "closer" as I did for "#selfie."
@sach
agreed
|
| |
also if you look back at their older stuff pre-#selfie they were doing the same thing.
|
| |
what do you mean? their post-SELFIE work is incredibly different from anything else they did before it. they were way closer to being run of the mill electro-house/big room stuff, and it was after SELFIE and its reception when they decided to start making "SERIOUS" music.
also trying to argue a pop song's popularity meaning people like it is kinda meaningless, because theres plenty of songs people vocally hate that wind up in the charts all the time.
