This definitely isn't as immediate as Aura or Roots, but it's excellent to say the least. I really miss Lunn's drumming though, and I feel like this album could be so much better with a more claustrophobic style of drums similar to what was on Aura. It doesn't seem like much thought went into them, and that they are there just to be there.

Eh, maybe I just had unrealistic expectations though.

Remember receiving the promo for this, accidentally clicking Autumn Rain, and proceeding to listen to the first two and a half minutes repeatedly for about half an hour. Album is littered with so many shockingly gorgeous moments.

Honestly Saor is just fucking good but it's hard to really top Aura. I definitely think the pace change was cool, nothing is as frantic or chaotic as on Aura. This could be largely due however to the presence of Austin Lunn on the records with his really pummeling style of drums.

The drums are different on every album. Roots had that awesome tribal thunder on the title track and climax of Highland Lament, Saor was more traditional black metal, and this is more laid back to let the strings and guitar take the lead. That's how you build a discography.

I just think it's also personally taste, like I absolutely loved the rolling war-like drums off of Aura however I also think the riffs off of Guardians are a step up from Aura. So it's a trade off really

Andy told me he doesn't consider his Saor project Black metal, just folk metal. But it's definitely inspired by the black metal soundscape.
