Mono has been boring for years and years and there is nowhere for the band to go creatively because they've only ever gone to one place. It is all they know

Planning on jamming Walking Sky, You Are There, and then Hymn. If I need more, I'll keep going but I'm getting the sense that those are their main winners worth hearing.

basically, yeah
I suppose one could argue only You Are There and Hymn are essential, but Walking Cloud has tons of great stuff too
I wouldn't necessarily recommend starting with it though, I'd say check either YAT or Hymn first, as they leave more lasting impressions
hope you enjoy them, dude

I do think track 1 on this is one of the best songs they've ever written, just for how crazy intense it is when the track speeds up more and more and more until it's this uncontainable beast. But the version of it that's on this album kind of sucks because of the damn production making it too difficult to hear what's going on.

heh, though i don't doubt what you're saying, i'm super picky with production and texture - it's a huge part of my enjoyment for the album, and it's even more prominent in post-rock. to tell you the truth, the last well produced album they did as far as i'm concerned is hymn. the albums thereafter honestly sounded brash and confused to my ears.

not surprised by this review; needed to be said. nothing worse than a post-rock band that doesnt do anything new, mostly because post-rock beyond any one band's discography is notoriously homogenous (moreso than any other genre imo) and for a band to offer nothing more than the same old thing that not only they themselves but an annoying amount of others have done fairly warrants a 1.5.

I agree about production. Have you heard the version of the track 1 that is on their split with The Ocean? I mean the production isn't amazing or anything but the point is it doesn't have that harsh fuzz that just shoves itself in front of everything else half way through the song, so you can actually hear the drum beat as it gains momentum. Might be worth checking out if you feel like it, though I'm not expecting you to do a complete 180 on it or anything. I just like how energetic it gets.
Yeah there is a lot going on in the higher frequencies in a lot of their albums that can get a little bit too brash, as you said. Generally I haven't minded that too much though. But yeah nothing they've done since Hymn has sounded as good as that album, songwriting-wise or production-wise.
Edit: To clarify, tracks 1 and 2 on this album are just a re-recording of the music they put out last year on a split with The Ocean. Kind of sucky that it's not all new material.

i haven't, i'll definitely give it a try on the ocean's split, if only out of curiosity. thanks for the tip!

Quiet geniuses, Mono, have deftly produced one of the most beautiful and endearing albums in years.
