im not surprised in the slightest, it seems like the longer 70s bands go the worse they get.

I'm certainly looking to try this eventually based on my love for Songs for America and Point of Know Return, but I'm not expecting a late career surprise anywhere close to Clockwork Angels.

It's a pretty harmless album, even the longer tracks don't feel really special, but it's not bad. Fans of the band will likely dig some stuff. Personally I mostly had problems with the vocals, at times just not very pleasant to the ear. I will spin this at least another time, maybe it's a grower

Nice to see another album from them. I've no great expectations, but I need to listen to it soon as I can. Anyway, good review. Have a pos.

This is better than I expected it to be, but worse than it should have been, somehow. Meh, pretty average for Kansas.

I think the tracks that stood out to me were Crowded Isolation and Camouflage. Will jam again tomorrow. The Voyage seemed quite indulgent at first listen

Yeah ''Crowded Isolation'' is great instrumentally, but I begin to get used to the vocals that are reminiscent of the ones in Fates Warning imo. Both singers are an acquired taste, so yes...

As for ''The Voyage'', it's the song that is the closest of these good old classic Kansas epics. ''Camouflage'' is pretty sexy instrumentally. It has the best instrumental breaks of the album.

Glad to see that you already see the strenghts on here, Sab. I still have some 3.5 songs that could be changed for a 4 over time. ''Crowded Isolation'' is one of them.

Still not sold on the vocals, but I'm liking it more. The album's second half feels stronger to me, but overall The Unsung Heroes is the only track that makes me want to skip. Camouflage to Crowded Isolation is my favorite section now

I love the Celtic folk feel that ''The Voyage of Eight Eighteen'' offers. The interplay between the bass and the electric guitar is gorgeous, as is the vocal melody. Its 8:18 minute running feels like 4 minutes which is a good sign. If anything, the intro is perhaps too long, I would simply start the song with the vocal lines, since the Celtic theme's intro is coming again through the song. It's still my favorite, followed by ''Camouflage'' which is fantastic mainly in its instrumental section. ''Crowded Isolation'' rocks hard too. Arguably my third fave here.

My two least favorite are easily ''The Unsung Heroes'', a bland ballad that breaks the flow and ''Refugee'', a poor man's Dust in the Wind''.

Woha, a new Kansas album? Have to check I guess.

Review is a very good read but pretty devastating in its verdict. Have a pos.

It's an easy listening, it rocks hard and progs as much as the good old classics here and there. Not many weak songs on here. It's at least a 3/5 worthy.

I'm devastating in my verdict but I do outline my sympathies towards the band. I'm not going off an saying "THIS IS SHIT, ERMUHGERD"

This is Kansas, not Sodom.

Absolutely, my comment wasn't meant to be derogatory or condescending. You state your opinion in a respectful tone and an elaborate manner which is the reason why I pos'd your review.

I just created a profile on this site for the sole purpose of disagreeing with your review. I think this album is excellent all around. And the new vocalist is very impressive! I saw Kansas back in 2010 and Steve Walsh doesn't have the power he used to have so now they have someone who can fill the role the way it needs to be. The only thing missing is the second lead vocalist. I'm very excited about this new record and looking forward to the next.
