Good review. This album has its pluses, but man, the drop in quality from Free Hand is steep.

Interview easily beats The last three albums. That 2.5 burns my eyes, smaug. There are no song below 3.5 to me. Try again songs like ''Interview'', ''Design'', ''Another Show'' and ''I Lost my Head''.
And like I said, each and every songs have something special onto it.

Now I am having flashbacks and remember being driven to school listening to Gentle Giant and Frank Zappa with my dad and Fleetwood Mac and Def Leppard with my mom.

@Storm, it's pretty cool. All like Obelix, you fell into the pot when you were a kid. ;)
@bnelso, yes, I feel the song writing was neglected here. They probably made the album too fast. We still find some classic GG tracks though (classic parts here and there at the least).

^ Agreed. There is some very enjoyable material and some good ideas, but it does half-baked. Maybe you're right. Maybe the band rushed this one. It's difficult to say.

Yeah most of the songs could have been better. ''Another Show'' and ''I Lost my Head'' are the exceptions to me.

I can agree with that. Those two tracks would be among my top 3 songs for this album. That's for sure.

Somehow, I think your rating is very fair. I myself always hesitate in gave to it 3.5 or 4.0. It's a question of being fair. I gave 4.0 to other Gentle Giant albums and since I have the possibility of 3.5, I think it's more fair to the other albums.

It's true that "Civilian" has some good tracks. But it has a problem. It doesn't sound a Gentle Giant's album. So, in my opinion, "Interview" is a better album. It has the main characteristics of their sound.

I agree but it's still good. This is truly a Gentle Giant's album.
Thanks, man.

I'm very glad you changed your opinion. Like Jethro, I still think that there is space for more improvement.

@e21; My initial rating was a 3.5. A BIG one like I used to say. But it could be a little 4 too. I'd 3.75 it if I could. The only other 4 I gave is for their eponymous album that I find superior than this one. So like you see, I'm hesitating myself. I guess it would depend of the day. One thing is sure, there is no bad song on here. Some are rather half-baked like bnelso said, but there again, songs all have their enjoyable parts nonetheless.
I gave another spin this afternoon, and I was tempted to 3.5 it. But I realized that I would be too harsh. But 4 is perhaps too generous...Ah well...

Yeah, Jethro. I had the same problem. I gave 4.0 to their debut and to "Three Friends". It would be injust to rate "Interview" with the same rating. By the other hand I gave 3.0 to "The Missing Piece", I like this album, and it would be another injustice to give the same rating for both. Anyway, I always liked "Interview". I have an old vinyl copy in my vinyl collection, so as you can see, for me, this is an album without great secrets.

Sorry, man. Unfortunately I forgot your comment. Fortunately, today I had plenty of them, which was great, of course.
Anyway, thanks man for your comment and pos.
