I agree with you smaugnan, Procol Harum is really an underrated band, as Moody Blues are, too. "A Salty Dog" is really good one of their best, undoubtedly.

About my preferences, I agree with many of the comments, "Shine On Brightly" is perhaps their best work. We mustn't forget that it has is great prog suite "In Held Twas In", which brings to the discussion what was really the debut prog album ever. Anyway, their debut album and "Grand Hotel" are probably better than "A Salty Dog".

I'm very glad to see this album reviwed for the first time and I was nothing surprised that it was covered by you.

Great job smaugman. I really enjoyed your review.

Indeed, I think there's good reason for Shine On Brightly to be considered the first real 'prog' album.

Yeah, maybe you're right. But, as you know, it isn't a consensual thing and almost all people continue thinking that the debut of King Crimson is the first one. Anyway I think this is a good question for a debate here.

Much needed review man, pos. Personally I'm not the craziest fan of this, but the title track is classic and I dig Wreck of the Hesperus. It was also used as the ending theme for a local TV program about documentaries and dangerous expeditions called Avventura ("adventure").

''think i will. what kind of prog is it?''

You mean The Moody Blues or Procol Harum?

@Jamie, I'll give another spin to Shine on Brightly. I think it's my second fave. Grand Hotel really impresses me.

Album is very polished. To me, it's in the vein of the eponymous, Salty Dog and Shine on Brighty at the same time. Even if they lost Trower, their guitarist, he was well replaced. Grand Hotel has many melodic, catchy songs into it. The only thing that is almost missing is the organ of their early days. Music is mostly centered around piano. A few favorite songs;

Bumped it up to a 4...''Boredom'' is the only annoyance off the album...The rest has grown on me big time.

I love bands with several lead vocalists. And this album's three singers are all wildly different. "Crucifiction Lane" is just awesome.
