Okay, wow, just finished listening to this and I'm absolutely blown away. The opener, Heliacal Rising, is one of the best openers for an atmospheric black metal album I've ever heard. It really sets the mood for the entire album. It's epic in the truest sense of the word, no cheese, but incredibly monumental. The album's pacing is very smart and effective. The First Point of Aries, as a single out of context was great, but sandwiched between the opener and Constellation Hipparchia gives it so much more purpose. Then come the two monoliths, Constellation Hipparchia and Occultated Temporal Dimensions. Soaring melodies on one half and dissonant dread on the other. Occultated Temporal Dimensions definitely starts out as the most different sounding song here but skillfully morphs back into the Luminiferous Aether vibe throughout. It’s a welcomed change of tone amidst the sea of grandiose passages. And then there’s that closer… color me impressed. Programmed or not, the drum patterns are much more interesting this time around. More varied and dynamic than they've ever been, and while this is a black metal album, he doesn't really on pummeling blast beats for an hour. The vocals are solid, still reverb laden as all hell, but what we come to expect from MC and work with the cosmic theme. They are more audible than previous releases, but the production in general is a leap in the right direction. The guitars and synths are spot on, ever changing, but masterfully focused. This is without a doubt the best Mare Cognitum album yet.

I am commenting on the first paragraph - you obviously haven't been listening to the right atmospheric black metal. Your musical pallet for the genre is probably pretty lean as u stated, but there is good stuff out there that transcends the genre. I love this style and love discovering bands within it. Excellent review and thanks.

Check out the Mare Cognitum/Aureole split, mainly the Mare Cognitum side. It's pretty killer and as good, if not better than this.

haven't heard that one but his song from the split with spectral lore (which is 30 minutes long btw) is solid af and his last album is probably even better than this on first listen, although they're all so solid. As much as I love darkspace and spectral lore I always thought the lo fi sound didn't work in their favor when you've got so many layers and guitars so Mare Cognitums crisp production is a welcome change. Very Unkvlt of me to say but that's how I feel
