Sweet, this and For Funerals to Come are probably their most underrated stuff. VE and TGCD are my least favorites definitely.

For Funerals to Come... is sweet, but this album is the culmination of that sound imo.

The lyrics on gateways of bereavement are hilariously amateur. It's like when Jonas was writing the song, he thought to himself: "how many ways can I tell the world how SAD I am in 8 minutes"?

Not Katatonia's best overall, but a good stepping stone for what became a great band.

The lyrics aren't amazing, but they're not bad. It's not like My Dying Bride or Anathema wrote lyrics that were any better.

How's that funny? It was a stepping stone. They began as this super depressive doom metal band that realized their talent in more rock-oriented song structure, with lyricism that got more refined over the years.

In the middle of giving this another go, and it's growing on me. I think my recent curiosity in atmospheric black metal albums has made me more open-minded to it.

It's hard to dig if it's not your thing but this album can count on some really "catchy" elements

I did notice that, namely some of the guitar playing that breaks up the songs, actually got me nodding my head. Was surprised an album of this nature would pull that off.

I do enjoy some of their later stuff and even think some of those albums are superb (Viva Emptiness for instance), but the lyrics on this album aren't any worse than some of the stuff they've written later on.
